Girls Characters Who Have a Gay, Lesbian, Or Bisexual Dad

When you are thinking about the father of your daughter, you'll probably think of the famous #GirlDad movement that began after the death of Kobe Bryant. It's a campaign that has since spread across the country and started in the NBA, where Kobe's death sparked an outpouring of support. But did you know that Hannah's dad isn't Kobe Bryant? In fact, Hannah's dad is Peter Scolari, the son of Gotham criminal boss The Gay, Mean Captain From The Wire.
Peter Scolari is the father of Hannah

The Emmy-winning actor who played the father of Hannah Horvath on the hit TV show Girls has passed away. Peter Scolari, 66, battled cancer for nearly two years before his death from the disease. The actor starred in sitcoms like Newhart and Bosom Buddies, and later he made his Broadway debut in the play "Lucky Guy." He won an Emmy for his role as Tad Horvath on Girls, and it was a character he played that earned him the fame.

Tad Horvath, the father of Hannah, was a college professor who shared the reality of the Horvath family with Hannah. While he wasn't as emotionally receptive as Hannah's parents, he tried to provide for Hannah, who was still unemployed after graduation. In the end, Hannah stayed with Tad and Loreen, but eventually he and his wife became fed up with her.

Earlier in his career, Scolari appeared in the sitcom "Newhart" as Michael Harris. The role earned him three Emmy nominations for his work as a supporting actor. His role on "Girls" made him the first "replacement nominee" after his original actor, Peter MacNicol, was disqualified because of technicalities. Hannah's gay father, Ted Horvath, is a prominent character on the show.
#GirlDad started after Kobe Bryant's death

The hashtag #GirlDad was born after the tragic death of NBA player Kobe Bryant, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Kobe and Gianna were killed in a helicopter crash near Calabasas, California, along with seven other people. Immediately, fans took to social media to share pictures of Kobe, quotes from his life, and memories.

The hashtag was born after a SportsCenter video showing a high-five-giving Kobe Bryant giving a pregnant woman.  podcast  went viral, and fathers around the world began tweeting pictures of themselves as girl dads. The hashtag was embraced by Kobe Bryant's family and friends, and eventually went viral. The hashtag was even used by celebrities like George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan.

Whether it was the NBA star or an athlete, a proud father is a hero in the eyes of his daughters. Kobe Bryant was a role model for fatherhood, and proudly had four daughters. While Kobe's death in an airplane crash may have inspired the #GirlDad movement, Central Texas dads had already been part of it long before the hashtag became popular.

Aside from Kobe's wife, Gigi was a basketball fan and loved basketball as much as her dad. Gianna was a talented athlete, and Bryant was very supportive of her athletic dreams. After Kobe's death, Gigi would have continued his legacy of being a dad. If Gigi had lived, she would have inspired another generation of athletes to follow in his footsteps.
